As profits climb, don’t leave your staff behind!

John Reid & Sons Ltd, a Dorset steel company otherwise known as REIDsteel, intends to move to a new state-of-the-art facility after outgrowing its Christchurch base.

The company has 130 staff and needs to move out of its current base, where it has been for more than 50 years.

It has proposed that up to 220 new homes should be built on its site, which is in an otherwise residential area. When it moves away, it will greatly reduce traffic noise and disruption in the area.

REIDsteel’s intended new premises, somewhere within Chichester Borough Council, will allow development in many areas, including cutting-edge equipment, more environmentally sustainable operations, better access and modern offices.

Simon Boyd, managing director of REIDsteel, said: "These exciting development plans will allow our business to invest in the latest technology and increase productivity, which will create more jobs and support the local economy while also providing much needed housing.

"It will also mean the removal of an industrial operation from a predominately residential area, and associated reductions in heavy traffic movements and noise."

Clearly REIDsteel has been very successful to outgrow its current base, and many congratulations to it. However, so often companies focus on growth and profits to the exclusion of anything else, and this can cause staff productivity to nosedive.

A prime example of this is when companies do not update their time and attendance management system. For some companies this means still using punch-cards, and for others it means using manual paper timesheets which employees fill in. For some – generally office-based businesses – it means using nothing at all to record working hours and only the most rudimentary absence recording.

Obviously, none of these options are ideal. Punch-cards are old-fashioned and easy to swap between employees in order to fraudulently clock in for each other, paper timesheets are notoriously hated and filled in inaccurately, and having no system at all means that often managers don’t have a “big-picture” view of absences and lateness in their team.

Our attendance system can solve those problems!

  • Our radio-frequency smart-cards are quicker to scan than punch-cards, which makes lunchtime queues for the microwave much better!
  • Our simple, quick clocking process eliminates the need for the dreaded timesheet, freeing up managers and payroll staff to do more important things.
  • Your clocking data is stored in the central system, and can be used in reports and graphical displays to spot patterns in absences or lateness which would otherwise go unrecognised.
