Smart card system savings will help to preserve jobs

Portsmouth RFA job lossThe jobs of thousands of navy workers are under threat because the force is preparing to cut its auxiliary staff, and because of the nation’s deficit. At a meeting in Portsmouth, employees were told the entire Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) could be replaced by private workers and vessels. The RFA flotilla is the supply lifeline of the navy, delivering fuel, food, stores and ammunition to warships.

The reason given to workers was that heavy pressure from the Treasury had forced the Ministry of Defence to show it can shed costs. The coalition government is pressing on with plans to cut the huge national debt, so the defence industry is bracing itself for cuts across the board. The navy believes it can save millions by swapping civil servants and MoD vessels for private alternatives more of which are available in the recession.
