Labour councillor Simon Letts admitted there would be “significant job cuts”. The unions – who represent most of the council workers – met last Thursday (November 15) to discuss a way forward. They also claim some council services, including the ‘Our House’ children’s home and youth, will be closed.

The new headquarters will be at Theale Cross in Pincents Lane, which is close to Junction 12 of the M4 motorway. The building will get a million-pound refurbishment. The service said its current HQ and fire station in Tilehurst, built in the 1960s and early 1970s, were run down. The work will be partly funded by the sale of the Dee Road and Cookham fire station sites.
