WinTA Start tracks unauthorised sick leave in World Cup month

2010 FIFA football World CupThe Football World Cup 2010 begins this weekend – but firms warned there would be no leniency towards those throwing sickies to watch games. Organisations and companies in Plymouth said it would be "business as usual" during the next month.

A spokesman for Devonport Dockyard operator Babcock Marine, which has about 4,000 employees, said they were taking a tough line on the issue. "We will look at leave requests and, subject to operational requirements being met, they will be looked at sympathetically," he said, adding: "We are not putting up any TVs for the games. It will be a normal working day for us." A Ministry of Defence spokesman said defence chiefs consider the World Cup period as being a normal working period.
